READING SKILL: Synthesizing
putting your learning pieces together
STRATEGY: Tracing ideas through scaffolded text and recording them on a ripple organizer
Objective: swbat create a 1 minute video representing their synthesis of learning from beginning to end as well as answer multiple choice questions displaying their mastery of the synthesis process on an unknown mashup of media resources on the same topic
Step One: What HAPPENS IN YOUR BRAIN AS YOU SYNTHESIZE?
STEP ONE ACTIVITY: After watching the video annotate to show your understanding. Answer these questions in your notebook or on the Google Form from your teacher...
1. What is the synthesizing project you are currently working on in your class? What is the topic and your basic understanding?
2. Write your learning journey in three sentences: sentence 1 - what you thought after the first article/infographic sentence 2 - what you thought after the second article/video/infographic sentence 3 - what you thought after the third article/video/infographic
STEP TWO: WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR IDEAS AS YOU SYNTHESIZE IN YOUR BRAIN?
STEP TWO ACTIVITY: After watching the video annotate to show your understanding. Answer these questions in your notebook or on the Google Form from your teacher...
1. Make a list of all the things you read that you will include in your learning journey. List the articles, infographics, videos, images and anything else you used to learn more about the topic you are thinking deeply about.
STEP THREE: Practice your new synthesizing skills!
You are now ready to practice your newly understood skill of synthesizing. Follow these instructions.
1. Go to this website http://bit.ly/synthesizenow and complete the activities.
Activity 1: Biopic poster - this is a BIOgraphy PICture that you will use and then send the final poster to your teacher
Activity 2: Part, Part, Whole - this is a super short story you will create adding music to support the emotion
STEP FOUR: Now you are ready to create your synthesis project!
1. Think of all the resources you have used on your learning journey and the things you wrote down from STEP 1 and STEP 2 above.
2. Notice how you created the Biopic poster (with music) and the Part, Part, Whole super short story (with music.)
3. Now make a plan for your own synthesis project: poster/Google Slides and video (with music) that symbolizes your learning journey
4. Use the Checbric from your teacher to complete your work - check off the items as you complete them and see the details for the video portion of the assignment.
